How many bees are in a bee colony?

On average, a bee colony contains from 50,000 to 70,000 bees, which produce a harvest of from 60 to 100 pounds (27 to 45 kilograms) of honey per year. A little more than one third of the honey produced by the bees is retained in the hive to sustain the population.
