What type of high-technology material is used in space vehicles for its heat-resistant properties?

Carbon-carbon composites (CCCs) are baseline materials in high temperature applications such as re-entry vehicle nose tips, rocket motor nozzles, and the Space Shuttle Orbiter leading edges. Carbon-carbon is a non-metallic composite material made of carbon fibers in a carbon matrix having operational capabilities ranging from cryogenics to 5,000°F (2,760°C). Numerous fiber types and weave patterns having a wide range of physical properties are available, providing flexibility in the design of carbon-carbon components. Carbon-carbon has a unique combination of light weight, high strength, and temperature resistance.
