How common is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer, excluding skin cancers, in American men. It is the leading cause of cancer death among American men. The American Cancer Society estimated that 234,460 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in the United States and 27,350 men in the United States died of prostate cancer during 2006. Approximately one man in every six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only one man in 34 will die of this disease.
