Whom did he defeat in the general election?

Hoover defeated Democrat Alfred Smith of New York handily to win the election. A four-time governor of New York, Smith was the first person of the Catholic faith to be nominated for president. Hoover trounced Smith in the election, winning 444 electoral votes to Smith’s mere 87.
